Her Story – Amri Murray, Founder
Waking up one morning to find one eye blinded and plagued by relentless headaches was a daunting reality I faced some time ago. Wearing a black eye patch like a pirate, unable to tolerate any light, was truly an unexpected challenge. I was told that my potential fix was a cornea transplant with several months for recovery. I had to contend with this reality of potentially permanently losing sight in one of my eyes all while I juggled my studies, family, and work commitments. Somehow, I managed to successfully complete all my final exams, earned my Bachelor of Laws degree, went through recovery from surgery, and gave birth to my first child in 2009.
In 2010, I made the bold move from Jamaica to Canada. I was faced with the decision of setting aside my law degree to work at a law firm as a bill collector. This role though not the desired role kept me close to the legal world I aspired to be part of. Progressing to a legal assistant brought me even closer to my true calling. I absorbed everything I could, but the path to a meaningful career as a legal advocate in Canada was financially and mentally daunting, requiring me to write the LSAT, pursue yet another law degree, articling and write the bar exam.
In 2015, while expecting my second child, I discovered a one-year course that offered limited legal practice capabilities. Attempting to balance this course while on maternity leave seemed like my only option allowing me to keep my job, maintain family commitments and pursue my career goal. With determination, I embarked on this course. Studying at nights with a newborn is no walk in the park along with the daily rush to catch the bus for class. Sometimes I was embarrassingly soaked in breast milk upon my arrival. This journey was tedious, but I somehow pulled it off, graduating at the top of my class with an award of merit.
While working as a legal assistant, I came face to face with my true potential to make a real difference in people’s lives. I frequently got the feeling I was on the wrong side of some of the cases that came across my desk. In 2018, I took the leap and launched AJ Murray Legal Services, focusing on Human Rights, Small Claims Court, Landlord and Tenant, and Provincial Offences. Within one year, 2019, I expanded my team, laying the groundwork for growth. However, the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 brought unforeseen challenges, leading to the loss of my team and a significant loss in revenue. During this period, the physical intensity of my running hobby increased, I meditated more, and I absorbed myself in a world of business and self-development books. My resilience prevailed. By December 2020, I hired a new assistant and focused my energies on practice areas that seemed to be moving ahead in some way despite COVID-19. I simultaneously took a course in Adult Education achieving a perfect 4.0 GPA. That same year, I taught at a local College and eventually became the faculty head of the Paralegal Studies faculty in a matter of approximately five months.
In 2021, amidst the pandemic, I focused on expanding my practice, overcoming tremendous systemic obstacles. I managed to gain the respect of judges, adjudicators, clients and my peers for my outstanding work. My relentless efforts resulted in hiring over 10 paralegals and establishing three thriving locations across Ontario. My firm not only empowers paralegals but also enhances community access to justice. I am passionate about community building, dedicating hours to pro bono work annually. As an avid runner, I believe physical fitness is crucial to mental health and plays a key role in the achievement of your goals.
Today, I look at my very successful business, the short amount of time it took me to build this business and I can say with certainty that there are some groundbreaking tools if implemented correctly that can accelerate your journey to success. No matter where you are in the world, let us guide you in realizing your dreams in a fraction of the time you may believe possible.
